Jeff’s Place at Six Nations

Over the summer of 2024, I was commissioned by No More Silence to create a memorial at the Hummingbird Healing Lodge at Six Nations. It commemorates Jeffrey McNeil Seymour, a fierce Secwepemc, two-spirit land defender and dear friend, who passed away in June of 2023.

One of the first things Jeff taught me is that as queer people, we don’t need to “come out”, we need to come in—come back into the circle. This space is an opportunity to do that, to come together with intention.

The bench serves as a respite for attendees of the healing lodge. It surrounds a planter that signifies the life giving force. The pillars surrounding it represent his ancestors and provide shelter. They cradle the space like two open ar
